Milestones of Development
Developmental milestones are an important means for a paediatrician to assess the wellbeing and neurodevelopmental progress. Remember that the chronological age of a child is used in developmental and growth assessment for the 1st year of life. If a baby was for example born 2 months premature, the baby’s development and growth at the age of 6 months, will be assessed as if the baby is 4 months old. Also remember that these are guidelines only. There is always an leniency of about a month or two (depending on which milestone it is). Don’t panic it your baby only starts smiling at 6 weeks and 1 day, and not exactly 6 weeks!
